CAMPANE MORTI E ACQUA CRESCENTE (2001)

One of the themes in my work, both in concept and in method, is the idea of creating new works from fragments of old works. Campane Morti e Acqua Crescente was composed while I was studying composition for prof. Jan Sandström. With his permission, I took fragments from a recording of his piano piece "Campane in Campi Aperti"; three chords plus 20 seconds of pointillistic texture, and used them as the sonic foundation of my piece. No other sound sources are used. Sandström's title translates into "Bells in Open Fields", mine into "Dead Bells and Growing Water".

The piece was selected as one of the pieces to represent Sweden in the Nordic UNM festival for contemprary music in 2004. A two-channel version of the piece can be found on my debut album "Exercises in Estrangement" (2005).
